    Default Announcement: "The Blood Triangle"

<< POSTPONED INDEFINITELY - Or at least until HSFX v4.1. >>

    Coming Fall and Winter 2009

    Cooperative Campaign: "The Bloody Triangle"

    - Coverage of the Papuan Campaign

Relive those early days of WWII as United States (USAAC) and Australian (RAAF) air forces, after stagering initial losses in the opening days after Dec 7th, turn back the tide against the Japanese forces in the South Pacific. Participate completely in the western half of the ELKTON Plan.

Over time, the missions will take place on the Darwin, New Guinea, Slot and possibly a NEW map that is a WIP. Some missions will begin and end at Darwin, while others will begin and end from major air facilities at Port Moresby, Dobodura, Nazdab, and Hollandia depending on the date of the campaign. Missions will include ALL facets of the Air Campaign in the SWPA: Ground Attack, Fighter Sweep, Combat Air Patrol, Escort, Naval Interdiction, Reconnaissance and Bombardment.

As a campaign participant, you will be able to select to fly with any of the following '5th Air Force' Combat Aviation Units" as they become available during the campaign.

    Map construction in-progress now.............(slowly)

It is possible that this 'could' be a "Moving Dogfight" if the technology matures enough by the scheduled/planned date to begin.

    Essential Reading List:

"Touched With Fire: The Land War in the South Pacific" by Eric M. Bergerud
"Fire in the Sky" by Eric M. Bergerud
"General Kenney Reports, A Personal History of the Pacific War" by George C. Kenney
"War has a grim purpose and is extremely complex. Sophisticated planning and doctrine are present at every level. Yet at the point of fire battle is the essence of chaos and violence."

Do you boys remember the devilish weather conditions Oscar wants us to fly in? I can hear him right now, hunkered down in his home in Alabama, he,he,he,he,he. You boys will never learn, will you. He just thinks of you as fresh meat to feed his fiendish imagination.
Well we can't let you go in there all alone, now can we, Pers? Sign us both up for whatever you can come up with.

Believe it or not, just today, I found ALL the weather data from 1941-1945 for Port Moresby, New Guinea!!!!, so, YES, the weather will be spot-on - as accurate as I can make it - with wind conditions........

George Preddy (HO-P, PE-P, Cripes a' Mighty I, II, and III) was assigned to the 9th Pursuit Squadron, 49th Pursuit Group in the early months of 1942, flying P-40s from Australia. The 352nd has deep roots in this area and at this time.

Last night, Deacon inquired as to the status of this campaign and my anticipated schedule.

Here's the NEWS; at least all the NEWS fit to be printed......

    The Map....

Unlike regular campaigns where you already have the map and can just start building missions, I am having to "re-construct" an existing map for this campaign. In this case, "MrO's Kokoda" map. Its an excellent map, don't get me wrong. But for my needs, it needed to be more. So, a new 'version' of that map is being created - actually, 4 versions of the map representing the 4 quarterly periods of 1942; Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sept and Oct-Dec.

Each of these versions will have its own actors.static and load.ini files. As there were many changes during this period to the area around Port Moresby and New Guinea, there are actually 4 map_t (terrain) files as well as well as a completely new set of terrain image files that more accurately protray the desolation of the jungles of the Central New Guinea plains and mountains between PM on the southern coast and the Gona-Buna area on the north coast. Much of this texture and terrain work is completed.

Still some things to finish off though.

For example, Port Moresby itself has had a complete rebuild. I had to rip out what was there and start anew, using historical street maps for 1942, I have re-constructed PM - building for building, street for street - including Government House, residence of Gen MacArthur during his visits.

As another example, all the 'roads' have been removed and a completely new, and more acurate road and trail system is being built. Note I said "is" being built, as this step is still not completed.

In another example, in Jan 1942, there were only two airdromes at PM; 3-Mile and 7-Mile. The original map has the six airdromes that existed as of Dec 1942, so bases have to be removed, and depending on the map version (quarterly periods previously discussed), added back in either 'under-construction' or 'completed' forms. This phase of the construction process has not been started yet because the under-lying geographical area needs to be fixed first and I'm still working on completing that.

I should make another important note here; this work I'm doing with this map is being done in lock-step with what I see and discuss with THRUD and the "Pacific Team" for the future 'New Guinea-New Britain' map. My version(s) of this map stops exactly where their's starts so that there is continuity between the two maps overall; not only in the calendar periods being covered, but also in general appearance. This is because there are overlapping geographical areas between the two maps. As such, the release of my map, and the campaign I'm building, is highly dependent of the release of their map - they are tied together very tightly now. How certain things are visually represented on my version of this map need to match how they are represented on their map.

    The Campaign....

Actually, the research for this is way ahead of schedule. I have more material that I can sometimes sift through. I have been able, through various sources (about 50), to document the events of each and every 'combat day' during 1942 for this campaign. As of this morning, the campaign outline is 387 pages in length! This will get streamlined as the build process starts but, I can account for just about every aircraft that flew on any given day, from any participating squadron; for every infantry unit, for every ship movement, Allied or Axis.....

So, how will the campaign play?

Well, as of right now, this will be a "Moving Dogfight" campaign with each 'combat mission period' being 3 hours in real-time length representing a 24-hour combat day. (This could be expanded to 2 3-hour real time combat mission periods representing 2 12-hour combat days as needed.) The combat mission periods will be held on either or both of our normal flight nights - or off-schedule. Between the combat mission periods, "recon only" flights will be permitted so that 'role-playing' commanders can decide how to apportion their pilots for what needs to be done during the next combat mission period. That's right, I will give you 'directives' of what needs to be accomplished, Axis and Allied, for any combat mission period. It will be up to you to decide how and when those directives will be met, and, to make sure they get done. Successful mission accomplishment will be (directive) goal-based. If you don't accomplish a mission directive, then you'll probably be behind the 8-ball because, not only will you have the uncompleted set of mission directives to accomplsh for the next combat mission period, but, you will also have a new set of mission directives for the new combat mission period to complete as well.

Mission building is already in-progress for the AI portions (ground and air) of the combat mission periods.

There are other surprizes as well that I will save for right now.....
This is just to wet your appetites for now......
    Much to be completed yet.........
    The work continues.........

P.S. Forgot to mention "When". As I said, much is dependent on the release of the NGNB map, but right now its looking like Nov-Dec 2009.
